Biography

"I believe that music has a transformative power. It acts as a veicle which promotes self knoledge and the ability for people to express themselves.."

It was at Conselheiro Lafaiete, where he was born, that Filipe Gonçalves first studied classical guitar. However, his first contact with a great guitarist happened during his adolescence in another town. At Congonhas, he had the opportunity to participate in a masterclass with pro guitarist Marcos Vinícius. Hence, his formation became more diverse and sophisticated.

He moved to his state capital, Belo Horizonte, to improve his technique, dedicating his efforts to the classical guitar. Nowadays, he has a bachelor’s in classical guitar from the Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais and is a masterclass veteran, having studied with grand masters of the guitar such as Álvaro Pierre (Paraguay), Roland Dyens (France) and Carlos Barbosa Lima (Brazil).

BBesides giving classical and electric guitar lessons for over seven years, Filipe has played at important concert halls such as the Sala Juvenal Dias, at the Palácio das Artes, and the Sala Sérgio Magnani, at the Fundação de Educação Artística. He also uses his time to spread good music, and has played in his home state countryside, at universities and television shows.

In 2009 he won the Jovem Músico BDMG prize and was heralded as “one of the great promises of his generation” by the Estado de Minas newspaper. In 2010, he classified in the top 3 at the V Concurso de Violão do CMVL da FITO em Osasco and also at the fourteenth edition of the traditional Concurso de Violão Musicalis at São Paulo, SP. For five years he played pieces by several composers in the tv show Segunda Musical, aired in TV Assembléia channel. In 2013, he was a finalist of the IV Concurso Internacional de Guitarra Ciudad de Lima during the IV Festival de Guitarra Vivace Peru, at Lima.

After acquiring all that experience, especially as a teacher, Filipe felt that learning music has to be a very good experience, instead of something standardized. That’s why he created #Bravo, a music school where the lessons are planned based on every student’s tastes and objectives. The students choose which pieces they want to learn and, if there’s no reference material, the teachers create whatever is necessary.

Working with qualified teachers and a good infrastructure, Filipe believes that he can keep doing what really matters: Taking good music to all those that need it.
